Vegan Vacation to Arizona 2020

Chicago is where I grew up, Dallas is my home and Arizona is my happy place. I have previously vacationed in Sedona, Arizona two years ago and when I was younger. It had a lasting effect on me.  If you have not been to Arizona before it is a beautiful, mountainous and warm place.  Sedona specifically is unbelievable, it is like no other place.  It is filled with beautiful red rocks with panoramic views everywhere you turn.  It is a relaxing place with amazing hikes.  I had some memorable food in Sedona.

1. Sedona Real Inn & Suites Breakfast:  Our hotel stay included free breakfast.  I enjoyed eating at our hotel each morning.  I found that they have almond milk, I was very content with this.  Every morning I was able to have cereal, toast with peanut butter and fruit loops. I had a great breakfast every morning.

2. Picazzo’s Healthy Italian Kitchen:  After researching restaurants in Sedona I was most excited for this restaurant.  An allergy friendly Italian restaurant is very hard to find.  Normally the closet I get is Italian food made at home by my father.  I would recommend making reservations prior to eating here.  Luckily, we were able to find two open seats at the bar.  The place was packed which is a good indicator that the restaurant is good.  I ordered a vegan garlic bread, chicken Parmesan and raspberry cheesecake. All vegan and all amazing!  Later in the week I order vegan garlic bread, chicken piccata and raspberry. I was so lucky to eat their twice. If you have any sort of food allergy or preference this place is perfect for you.

3. Berry Divine Acai Bowl:  I was so impressed by this place that I have decided to write a separate blog post about it.  I loved it!  This is my favorite acai bowl ever! I ordered a soft serve Sedona Acai Bowl.  It has strawberries, bananas, granola, and honey with the acai soft serve blend.  I ate here many times!  It was amazing and completely dairy free!

4. Golden Goose American Grill:  This is one of the only places that I have seen DF (dairy free) listed on a menu.  They had many dairy free, vegan and gluten free items listed on the menu.  My only complaint is that the bread was not dairy free.  I ordered vegan stuffed portabello mushroom with french fries.  It was ok, next time I would try something else.  I recommend eating at this restaurant if you can, we had excellent service and great food.

5. Nami: A vegan bakery in Phoenix.  I have been drooling about this place for two years! I was so impressed by this place that I have wrote a separate blog post about it.  I am awestruck that I could get dessert out in a bakery.  It has been so long since I was able to have ice cream out.  Everything in the bakery is vegan including the soft serve ice cream.  I ordered the doughboy vanilla soft serve.  It was amazing my mouth is still watering from it.  Highly recommend.

6. Mellow Mushroom: Pizza restaurant. They have a lot vegan options and toppings. I was able to have a pizza with mushrooms, tofu and vegan cheese. It was delicious! Wow! I can’t wait to eat there again.

7. Canyon Breeze Restaurant: It was a huge food court type restaurant. They had a few vegan options. I ate vegan enchiladas with beyond meat. My boyfriend ate a beyond meat burger with fries. Both very good! It’s in downtown Sedona, so it’s a good location with a view.

8. Snooze, A.M. Eatery: Breakfast/ Brunch restaurant. I ate the sweet potato hash. It was amazingly good! Also I found out they have restaurant locations in Dallas, so yay!

9. OHSO Brewery: Food restaurant. I ate avocado toast. My favorite part was the potatoes, they were out of this world good.

10. Unbaked edible cookie dough: Cookie dough shop. My first cookie dough shop. It was so sweet and filling. I’m glad I got to experience it.

11. Snakes & Lattes: Board game bar. This was a cool experience a bar where you could pay board games with friends. Really cool. They had great vegan options as well. I ate vegan disco fries. Fries with cheese on them.

12. Pomegranate Cafe: Vegan restaurant. I ate their nachos. They were good and spicier than expected. Definitely a restaurant to check out.

Below I have attached the seven-day itinerary we used on our trip.  On our trip we rented a car.  We stayed in the Sedona Real Inn & Suites, it is about 1 hour and 56 minutes north of Phoenix.  We enjoyed staying here because of the breakfast, location, and room size (we had a fire place).  We had a positive experience here.

Dairy Free Trip to Las Vegas, NV 2019

I have been to Las Vegas before and have already written about it. This time going to Vegas I was 100% dairy free. So I have included my trip itenary and review of every place we visited. I was really impressed this time around.

Day 1

  • Arrive in Vegas
  • Check into hotel. We stayed at the Golden Nugget in old Vegas.
  • Order The Modern Vegan. We ordered vegan corn dogs, mac and cheese balls and Louisiana fried chicken. We weren’t expecting the amount of food we got. But it was amazing, I went to bed with a happy and full tummy. The corn dogs were so much like a nonvegan corn dog it was astonishing. Also the mac and cheese balls were huge and big! The Modern Vegan was an excellent first choice to eat at.

Day 2

  • Lunch Baan Thai Restaurant. Honestly we ended up here on accident but it was perfect. We tried to go to the Almond Milk Creamery but they were unexpectedly closed. We walked around until we found vegan food. We didn’t regret our choice. We ate vegan veggie rolls, and kung pao tofu. It was wonderful and the service was outstanding. I am happy we ended up here.
  • Seven Magic Mountains. It is located off the strip. We rented a car for the day to go. It was something really cool to see in person. It is a art installation that is only around for a short time.
  • Snack at Almond Milk Creamery/ Cafe No Fur. Since we couldn’t go either we tried again later and had more luck. I ordered a vegan cookies n’ cream milkshake, beyond meat burger and french fries. The shop had a cool cafe vibe with a gaming feel. It was definitely worth the stop.
  • Dinner ordered from Almond Milk Creamery/ Cafe No Fur. We ordered later from the Almond Milk Creamery, I got vegan popcorn chicken. It was amazing!!! So good!

Day 3

  • Breakfast at Ameribrunch. I ordered a dairy free veggie hash. The potatoes were cooked to perfection. And the eggs were order hard just like I like them. It was a great brunch place for the whole family.
  • Casino
  • Pool
  • Dinner at Vegenation. I had my first vegan mac and cheese pizza. Wow! I never knew what I was missing. It was awesome!! I enjoyed every last bite! I highly recommend going to Vegenation if you are in the Vegas area.

Day 4

  • Breakfast at Eat. I ordered a vegan tofu scramble. It was very good! Also the potatoes were good too! It was another great brunch place for the whole family.
  • Lunch at the airport
  • Check out
  • Fly home

Dairy Free Things to Eat at The Airport

Lately I’ve been spending a decent amount of time at the airport. Naturally, being at the airport, you have to eat! In a perfect world having a dietary preference you are always prepared and have snacks made. But we all know that’s not always the case. So here are some options I’ve had success with so far.

Auntie Anne’s Pretzels! I was so happy to discover that their original pretzels can be made dairy free! All you have to do is ask for a fresh one with no butter! Also you can eat the marinara sauce! Be sure to allow enough time because usually they have to make you a fresh one and it takes 8-15 minutes to be ready. But really good!

Chick-fil-a! Be sure that the fryers aren’t shared! But dairy free people can eat the waffle fries and grilled nuggets! Always a great option!

Any candy store! If you are like me sometimes you just need some sour patch kids every once in a while. They are always dairy free too!

Dairy Free Trip to Southampton, Bermuda

I was fortunate enough to visit the island of Bermuda this summer. It was beautiful and an amazing experience. The forecast was calling for rain the entire trip but luckily it rained only the first day and was clear skies the rest of the trip. The weather was warm. I enjoyed hanging by the pool and beach for the majority of the trip. A copy of my trip itinerary is broken down below.

  • Day 1-
    • Fly there
    • Stay at The Fairmont Southampton
    • Order room service for late food

We got in pretty late to the hotel after a day of travelling. I ordered chips and guacamole. They were very good. From the airport to Southampton is about $50. A note for travelling to Bermuda, they do accept U.S. dollars or Bermuda currency but it is not necessary. You can get around the island by taxi, ferry, or bus. You cannot rent a car unless you are a local. You can rent a scooter but caution because they drive on the left side of the road. If you travel by taxi you need cash, they do not accept card.

  • Day 2-
    • Breakfast at hotel
    • Crystal and fantasy caves
    • Ice cream at Bailey Bays Ice Cream Parlour
    • Late Lunch at The Swizzle Inn
    • Dinner with coworkers 6:30 at Mediterra restaurant

We ate breakfast at the hotel in the glass room it was very pretty. I had a simple bread and fruit breakfast. After we took a taxi to the crystal and fantasy caves. They were cool caves to see in Bermuda. They were quite full of water with a ton of steps down. At the exit of the caves you can see Bailey Bays Ice Cream Parlour. It is very convenient if you go to the cave. I ordered a ginger coconut dairy free ice cream. Heads up they accept cash only. After ice cream we spotted the Sizzle Inn across the street. We walked over it is a pub that you should stop at in if you are in Bermuda. They are known for their rum swizzle alcoholic drink. The drink was mostly rum, I’m not sure what was the swizzle part. I ordered their vegetarian nachos but made them dairy free. It was a nice late lunch meal. Later for dinner we ate at the Mediterra restaurant in the hotel. I ordered a spaghetti with shrimp in it. Wow it was really good! The hotel was really good about making it dairy free and providing me with dairy free bread.

  • Day 3-
    • Day by the pool
    • Lunch at pool grill
    • Dinner at Waterlot Inn

Another beautiful day in Bermuda. I got up in the morning, put sunscreen on and ate a breakfast Kind bar by the pool. After sun bathing for a bit and a dip in the pool, I ordered lunch from the pool grill. I ate a dairy free plain hamburger with french fries. We ate at the Waterlot Inn. It was a short hotel shuttle to the restaurant. I was so excited because they had a separate vegan menu. I ordered the fried tofu. Again I had special dairy free bread. I was really impressed by the Waterlot Inn.

  • Day 4-
    • Pool in the morning
    • Lunch at the beach grill
    • Hotel beach day
    • Dinner at The Dining Room At Gibb’s Hill Lighthouse

The final full day in Bermuda! Again, I got up in the morning, put sunscreen on and ate a breakfast Kind bar by the pool. In the afternoon, we took a short shuttle ride to the hotel beach. Upon arriving we stopped by the beach grill. I ate a dairy free hot dog with french fries. We enjoyed at day at the beach and seeing Portuguese Man-O-War jelly fish wash ashore. We ate at Gibb’s Hill Lighthouse. It was a short taxi ride from the hotel property. It was really cute and romantic. I ate vegan meatloaf and raspberry sorbet. It was an amazing last meal of the trip.

  • Day 5-
    • Fly home

We headed to the airport early because small island airports can get busy and take a bit to get through security. There are 2 small counter serve restaurants to eat at, so I enjoyed my morning kind bar. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Fairmont Southampton. It had everything we could have ever wanted there. There was plenty of amenities and things to do. I loved our trip and was happy the hotel was able to accommodate me being dairy free.

Dairy Free Seattle Trip 2.0

The couple who introduced me to my boyfriend, moved to Seattle, Washington.  I have previously visited them, so I was excited to go back. We found some great vegan options we didn’t try last time. So each restaurant we ate at had dairy free options.  Here’s a review of the restaurants that we ate on our weekend trip.

Day 1

Fly to Seattle.

Day 2

Lunch at El Borracho. We ate at El Borracho right next to Pike Place. They had both vegan and non-vegan options. We ordered vegan chips and queso. I ate a vegan vegan burrito and a margarita. It was really amazing! I would love to go back again. It was a great stop.

Visit Pike Place Market and The Gum Wall. Always worth a stop!

Visit the Space Needle. Last time we visited it was closed for renovations. It was a great experience.

Dinner at Highline Bar. A completely vegan bar with vegan bar food. It was very heavy metal inside but the food was worth it. I had vegan chicken strips and poutine. I enjoyed the vegan chicken strips more than the poutine. They were both huge portions and very filling, good to share between 2-4 people.

Day 3

Lunch at Veggie Grill. I can’t pass up an opportunity to get the beyond burger with french fries again.  It is completely dairy free and really good.  The burger tasted just like meat, I am still amazed.  I am still in awe with how good the burger was.

Vegan ice cream at Frankie & Jo’s. I was thrilled to been in a vegan ice cream shop where I could eat and try everything. This never happens! I tried a lot of flavors but settled on Chocolate Tahini Supercookie and Frankie’s Brown Sugar Vanilla scoops. Very good!

Dinner at No Bones Beach Club. They have been on my list since I went to Vegandale. I was so excited! We waited close to an hour to eat here. I was researching online what to order because so many things looked so good. I ordered the amazeballs and fish n’ chips. I liked them both but, I loved the amazeballs! I will order those alone next time I go. I was impressed with the fish n’ chips, it tasted just like fish but better.

A Dairy Free and Gluten Free Day Trip to Magnolia Market, Waco, TX

I love HGTV and the show Fixer Upper.  Any obsessed Fixer Upper show watcher knows that the show is located in Waco, TX and that there’s a whole Magnolia store.  Since moving to Texas I have been so excited to visit Waco and see where the show is filmed.  I have seen it on the TV show, seen other people visiting and follow the Magnolia Market on Instagram.  So when the opportunity to visit presented itself, I jumped at the chance.

I read that the best time to go was during the week and early.  We planned to good on a Wednesday, yes it was still packed!  Luckily it was raining on our drive but once we got to Waco it was beautiful and sunny!  We couldn’t have picked a better day.  It was moderately muddy but a very enjoyable trip.

Before driving to the legendary Silos, we decided to stop for a quick lunch.  I am dairy free and my friend is gluten free to give you some background information.  There’s a nice strip of fast food once you get off the exit.  We agreed to stop at Chick-fil-a we both could eat the grilled chicken nuggets and waffle fries.  (Both dairy free and gluten free) It was a tasty and filling stop before we got into town and shopped the day away.

After eating, we drove around town to find a place to park.  We ended up parking for free on one of the town streets.  We later learned that there’s free parking on 8th street.  We headed first into the Magnolia Market.  For future reference, the street vendors are open Thursday to Saturday.  Upon walking up there was a long line for the Magnolia Bakery.

Our first stop was inside the Magnolia shop.  This was the busiest shop, they had everything from home decorations to Magnolia apparel.  They had all the typical cute white modern farm house furnishings.  I bought a medal quote sign, some Magnolia swag and decorative coasters.   We had to take our goodies back to the car because the metal sign was decisively heavy.

Next, we walked around the inside grass area that is encompassed by the iconic and rustic Silos.  We happened to be there when they were setting up the Spring at the Silos.  There were gorgeous flower decorations everywhere.  They had a cute stage area where, the TV worthy Silobrations take place.  There’s food trucks inside the gated area where you can buy anything from food to sweet tea to smoothies.  My friend got a sweet tea while I got a basic smoothie from the Luna Juice Bar Truck.  It was very good and refreshing.  We sipped our drinks in the seated area next to the Silos Baking Co.  We also stopped at the Magnolia Seed and Supply.  It was a cute gardening shop.

Before leaving Waco for the day we stopped at Little Shop on Bosque (the original Magnolia store).  I don’t know if this is an every day occurrence or not but if you buy something at the Magnolia Market you get 40% off at the Little Shop on Bosque.  Plus the Little Shop on Bosque was already 75%.  I walked out of their paying next to nothing and way less than I did at the Magnolia store at the Silos.  I picked up a cork board, ornaments and another t-shirt.

Our short day trip was both dairy free and gluten free.  We were very lucky at how nice the weather was on our visit.  We were lucky that we were able to take home our goodies on a short car ride home.  I look forward to visiting again soon.  Thank you for visiting and reading!  Don’t forget to follow me and comment on this post!  Additionally you can follow my Instagram account @smilewithoutcheese  New posts every Monday!

A Dairy Free Weekend in Austin, TX

Since moving to Texas I have done a lot of research to find the vegan hot spots in Texas.  Whenever I would search vegan food or ice cream near Dallas I would somehow end up back to Austin.  After searching on Instagram I learned that Austin, Texas is the vegan ice cream capital of the United States.  They even had an vegan ice cream crawl, I was so disappointed that I couldn’t attend.  But I put all the stops on my vegan ice cream bucket list.  Austin is known for being extremely vegan friendly.  I have been so excited for this trip because there were a lot of headquarters in Austin that I have been waiting to visit.

Ice Cream:

  • 20190118_224808Lick Honest Ice Creams: This was our first stop of the trip.  They had 4 vegan flavors at the shop.  Of course, I tried them all.  I had one scoop of the chocolate chocolate vegan ice cream flavor.  I can’t remember the other flavor I ate but it was tasty.  It was a good first stop but was excited for all the vegan ice cream to follow.
  • 20190120_194530Sweet Ritual: I was most excited for Sweet Ritual.  Their Instagram is very tempting.  All the shop is vegan which is so exciting!  I ate the cookies and cream flavor.  It was good but I do enjoy when my cookies and cream is chunky.  I love having large chunks of Oreos.  If I went back I would probably try another flavor.  But by far this was my favorite vegan ice cream stop.
  • 20190120_155006Milky Way Shakes:  Milky Way Shakes is a hidden gem.  But really it was pretty hidden.  I didn’t realize it was in the back of a restaurant in a small trailer.  The shake was definitely worth the wait and hype.  It is completely vegan.  I ordered the chocolate super moon shake.   It was so intricate and tasted out of this world.  I haven’t had a milkshake in so long and it was amazing!  I want to go back the next time I’m in Austin.

Food:

  • 20190119_114725Blenders and Bowls:  Blenders and Bowls is known for having the best acai bowls.  If you have been reading my blog you know I’m obsessed with acai bowls.  I ordered the O.G. and Strawberry Almond Butter Toast.  I really enjoyed both of the things I ordered.  The bowl was large and had amazing toppings (strawberries, bananas, honey and granola).  My only wish was that there was more honey on it.  The strawberry almond nut bread was on thick break and was again very good.  It was perfect to split between 2 people.  Everything was beautifully presented on the plate or in the bowl.  Everything I ate was dairy free too.
  • 20190119_154132.jpgThe Vegan Nom:  I didn’t realize that Austin had a big food truck/trailer scene until we ate at The Vegan Nom.  It was a chilly and windy weekend in Austin, but I did not mind eating outside.  I really enjoyed my vegan breakfast tacos!  They serve them all day and they were incredible.  My only wish is that they hadn’t sold out of their nachos!  Next time I plan to visit earlier in the day to get them.
  • Next Level Burger:  I was thrilled that there was a Next Level Burger in the Whole Foods!  It was really cool that you order from an iPad and they prepare everything as instructed.  You can completely customize your order with anything you can imagine.  I couldn’t believe everything was plant based on the menu.  I ordered a beyond meat burger and their signature cheese fries.  I enjoyed my burger a lot.  But the secret sauce on the fries was too intense for me, next time I will stick with just cheese.  Next time I plan to save room for a milkshake!

  • 20190120_124008Bouldin Creek Cafe: We went around noon and this place was packed!  The wait time for a table was insane!  We ended up rethinking our choice and was going to place a to go order.  Luckily, a spot for two opened up at the bar.  The restaurant was completely vegetarian and anything could be made vegan.  I enjoyed the vegan tamale breakfast.  My favorite part about it was the tofu scramble.  I was able to make mini breakfast tacos with tortilla shells.  Next time I visit Austin, I will be back to eat here!  It was also conveniently next to the welcome to Austin mural.
  • 20190120_190932Revolution Vegan Kitchen:  This was a bit of a drive from our hotel but I was pumped for it.  Online they advertise that they sell notarella sticks (vegan mozzarella sticks!)  We got their so late they were out of majority of their menu items.  I ended up ordering spicy shrimp tacos and curly fries.  I really liked both.  I will be back for those vegan mozzarella sticks!!
  • IMG_20190121_115038_708Arol’s:  This was our last food stop of the trip.  We ordered the Bacon cheeseburger and tator tots.  I liked it but by the end of the trip I was so full.

Bakery:

  • Capital City Bakery:  An all vegan bakery!  It was a great place to experience.  There were so many options I had no idea what to get.  I settled for a chocolate chip cookie.  It was so soft and good.  Next time I go, I’m trying their vegan cheesecake.

Stores:

  • Outdoor Voices Headquarter and store:  I was excited to experience both.  I was able to stop and take a picture in front of the headquarters.  It was cool to shop in their house like shop.  They were having a sale so it was a great day to be there.

  • imagejpeg_0Whole Foods Market: Actual heaven on Earth.  I was in my happy place.
  • 20190120_142930Erin Condren:  Finally!!  My inner teacher and organizing self was ecstatic.  I think I touched everything in the store.  I went home with a cart full.  It was so much better than ordering online.  I will be back!  I already can’t wait!!
  • 20190120_152108Rabbit Food Grocery:  An all vegan grocery store!  It was a neat experience to see what vegan products I have seen before and ones that I would want to try!  Very cool!

I enjoyed my trip to Austin, TX and I can’t wait to go again soon.  Some things that I can’t wait to stop at next time is NadaMoo, Vice Creame, Statesman Bat Observation Center, BBQ Revolution, Mr. Natural, The Vegan Yacht and Counter Culture.  Also there are several stops that I made before that I can’t wait to revisit.  I look forward to visiting Austin in the hot summer time!  I am so glad that it is so vegan friendly.
