Dairy Free Products I Can’t Live Without 2020

At first the idea of never eating dairy again terrified me.  I thought I could never do it but with the help of these products I can eat dairy free and enjoy some of the things that I ate before becoming lactose intolerant.  When I discovered alternatives existed it completely changed my life and paved the way for me to become completely free of dairy.  Moving to Dallas I’ve been exposed to new products, it’s different than what I’ve eaten previously. I’ve been dairy free for two years but I am constantly finding new things I love. Here are the dairy free products I can’t live without:

  • Daiya cheddar cheese:  This was the first dairy free product I have ever bought or been exposed to.  I remember the day, my mother came home and said, “Look Whole Food’s has dairy free cheese!  You can eat this!  Everything’s going to be OK”.  From then on everything was OK.  This dairy free cheese has the same taste as dairy cheese.  The only slight difference is the texture, when it melts it melts differently than dairy cheese.  Honestly I love this dairy free cheese so much so don’t mind the minor differences.  In my fridge you will also find Daiya mozzarella cheese too.  I like both flavors for different meals.  I use this product on Mexican and Italian dishes.
Image result for miyokos butter
  • Miyokos butter:  This butter is vegan butter with the same buttery taste.  It is very thick and creamy. I love using this for cooking and on toast or pancakes.  If I go out to eat for breakfast I take some of this with me to spread over my breakfast.
  • Daiya Deluxe Zesty Cheddar Style Cheeze Sauce:  I love queso.  As soon as I found this I was ecstatic.  In my opinion the Zesty is better than the traditional cheddar. I end up adding salsa to the regular cheddar if I can’t find the zesty cheddar.

  • Silk Dairy free Yogurt:  I love using the yogurt for smoothies or to create a yogurt parfait.  It is exactly like yogurt with dairy but better in my opinion.  It is light but not too thin or too thick like Greek yogurt.
  • Daiya Pepperoni Pizza:  It was very hard for me to accept that I would never be able to eat pizza again.  But this frozen pizza has made that possible for me.  The pizza is light, very crunchy and cheesy.  This is my go to dairy free pizza.  I have tried the Margherita pizza but I didn’t like it as much as the cheese.

  • So Delicious Dairy free Cookie Dough and Cookies N’ Cream ice cream.  This dairy free ice cream is amazing.  When I am craving ice cream I turn to either of these flavors.  They are amazing and the most like eating ice cream with dairy.  I highly recommend trying them if you love ice cream.

  • Ben & Jerry’s Non Dairy Chocolate Fudge Brownie Ice Cream:  This non dairy ice cream is very chocolaty.  It tastes like eating a brownie with ice cream.  I am proud of Ben & Jerry’s for creating a non dairy flavors.  This was the first non dairy ice cream I came across in the store.  I have tried the P.B & Cookies non dairy I didn’t like it that much it tasted too much like peanuts for me, it over powered the cookie part.
Image result for earth balance cheddar squares
  • Earth Balance Cheddar Squares:  This snack changed my snacking game.  Sometimes I have a taste for salty food and this snack hits the spot.  I can’t believe that vegan cheese squares exist.  I never thought I could eat something that resembled cheez-its again.  This is a great alternative and snack.
  • Nacho Vibes Hippeas: Vegan cheetos but better. This was a game changer. So good and so addicting.
Image result for kroger almond milk
  • Almond milk:  I typically drink original unsweetened almond milk from Aldi.  It’s a good price since I go through many cartons.  I have a glass with breakfast and dinner; I also mix it in with oatmeal too.  I have tried regular almond milk that’s sweetened but it’s too sweet for me.

Review of Eat Healthy Cafe Kauai, Hawaii- Vegan Restaurant

On my trip to Kauai, Hawaii we ate at one vegan restaurant repeatedly. We loved the Eat Healthy Cafe because it was walking distance from our hotel. We ate breakfast, lunch and dinner there.

Vegan plain bagel and cream cheese. It tastes better when it’s vegan!
I love acai bowls. This one is so fresh and banana-y!
Teriyaki and pineapple beyond meat burger. The best beyond meat burger I’ve ever had!
Vegan chocolate chip cookie. Soft and delicious!

I enjoyed every meal I had here (which was a lot). I loved that there was a vegan restaurant so close to our hotel. Everything I ate was amazing! You can learn more about Eat Healthy Cafe Kauai from their website or Instagram page!

Review of No Bones Beach Club- Vegan Restaurant

No Bones Beach Club is a unique beach style vegan restaurant. I have been lucky to visit two of their restaurant locations. Each is both have amazing food and are each very different.

Seattle, WA

When we were in Seattle, we had dinner at No Bones Beach Club. They have been on my list since I went to Vegandale. I was so excited! We waited close to an hour to eat here. I was researching online what to order because so many things looked so good. I ordered the amazeballs and fish n’ chips. I liked them both but, I loved the amazeballs! The amazeballs are huge fried mac and cheese balls. I will order those alone next time I go. I was impressed with the fish n’ chips, it tasted just like fish but better.

Chicago, IL

The Chicago location just recently opened. We thought it might be busy and have to wait. Luckily it wasn’t busy and you are able to order at the counter, pay and wait for your food to be brought to your table. Again I ordered the amazeballs, french fries and a pina colda. I was all very good, just like in Seattle. I loved the No Bones Beach Club Chicago and I look forward to going back in the future. Check them out if you are in the area.

Texas Veggie Fair- November 2, 2019

I had the best time at the Texas Veggie Fair in 2018. We went later in the afternoon and the event was smaller, but my experience was perfect. This year was held at the outdoor area of the Dallas Farmer’s Market. I couldn’t have anticipated how big it was going to be.

This year the Texas Veggie Fair turned 10 years old. This was their biggest event and the largest crowd I would say. It was packed full of people. Lines were long and their were so many vendors. It was amazing to experience. The location at the Dallas Farmer’s Market was fantastic.

First, the line to pay to park in the lot we parked in was ridiculous. So we needed food ASAP. We stopped at V-Eats to get their Southern Fried Chick-Non Basket to eat while waiting in another line. It was good as always.

Second, I got tamales from Sierra Valley Food. I got their cheese & green chile and chicken & salsa tamale. They were spicy but good. A vegan tamale is always necessary.

Third, I was most excited for the Corn Dog Guy food truck. The thought of vegan corn dogs is enough for me to be giddy. We ate both V-Eats and Sierra Valley Foods while waiting in line for the Corn Dog Guy food truck. The line was long but well worth it. I got a cheese corn dog and cheese fries. I loved both. I can’t wait to find the truck again soon!

After that, I was very fully and happily walking around. I tried the Beyond Meat Beyond Sausage it was tasty. I bought more All Y’all’s Vegan Jerky. I was honestly too full to consume anything more. Overall I had a great time! There were longer lines but I loved every minute of it.

Dallas Veg Fest- Sunday, September 22, 2019

I really enjoyed my time at the Dallas Veg Fest last year. I was really looking forward to going again this year. The event was located at Kiest Park Recreation Center in South Dallas.  Walking up there were various stands set up outside and food trucks outside.  They had designated healthy and active stands set up.  The fest was set up in the gym was various tables around the gym.  There was everything from food, grocery stores, essential oils, hospitals and organizations.

I stopped at Ann’s Health Food Center and Market for some vegan snacks. They loaded me with all the good snacks. It was great. Vegan jerky, chips, and cheese puffs.

Next, I stopped at the Plant Based Grocery. Per usual I bought a lot of goodies from them. I love stopping at their booth.

On the way out, I had Down to Earth. They are a vegan food truck. I tried their juice and grilled cheese sandwich. Both were amazing the drink and grilled cheese was delicious and exactly what I needed. I need to find the truck ASAP!

I can’t wait for the Dallas Veg Fest 2020. I had a great time! Thank you for visiting and reading!  Don’t forget to follow me and comment on this post!  Additionally you can follow my Instagram account @smilewithoutcheese  New posts every Monday!

I know it’s been a while but, new recipe alert! A new favorite recipe I’ve been making is vegan stuffed shells. If you know me, you know I love a good Italian dish. Vegan Mac and Cheese Balls Recipe from Thrive Market

Lately all I have been eating is vegan mac and cheese! Daiya cheddar mac & cheese, Annie’s vegan mac & cheese with chickenless tenders, and Daiya’s cheddar mac & cheese recipe. Anyway then I stumbled across this recipe from Thrive market and I was so excited to try it. The video made it look so easy to make.

Day 1. A lot of the stuff I had to improvise with. I only had one box of mac and cheese, I used a deep pot and I used a mix of vegan egg replacer. The first time I made it, I put it in the fridge for an hour and I had trouble getting the mac and cheese to stick. It was good but I had to change it the next day I made it a little differently.

Day 2. Getting better the mac and cheese was a lot firmer!

Day 3. Yum, seriously the best batch yet so good!

To see full recipe and video, click here. I believe these differences are why I didn’t have the exact outcome as the video. But it was still good each time! I can’t wait to perfect this recipe and eat it again soon! Stay tuned for more vegan mac & cheese yummyness.

Review of HG Sply Co.- Dallas, TX

I wanted to check out HG Sply Co. after finding the restaurant on google.  They have great vegan options alongside non-vegan options.  They are rated really well.  Also the restaurant is always packed, luckily we had a reservation.  I highly recommend having a reservation.  I saw the restaurant turn people away for walking into eat.

The restaurant has an overall rustic and wood feeling throughout the interior.  I was really happy when I saw on the menu that they are able to make anything on the menu without dairy.  The waiter was extremely enthusiastic about everything on the menu and very cautious with my dairy free preference.

Brunch

I’ve been dying to go to a rooftop yoga class held by Corepower yoga at HG Sply Co. But whenever I signed up it rained that Saturday morning. Finally the forecast was looking clear and I signed up to go. We arrived early to park and put down our yoga mats. You can sign up for the event on facebook, I got a discount because I am a black tag member. HG Sply cleared some tables on the rooftop so there was room to practice yoga. The class was great and the View of Lower Greenville was better.

After we practiced yoga, we had a buffet style breakfast. I learned from a worker that the entire breakfast was dairy free. I ate eggs, sausage, sweet potatoes and fruit. We also got mimosas! It was all really good! I hope to go back and enjoy brunch at HG Sply Co. again soon. It was a great view from the rooftop, eating and doing yoga. It was a great morning!

Dinner

IMG_20180902_172206_223

After reviewing the menu I ordered the HG Chips & Queso as an appetizer.  They’re vegan!  I couldn’t believe it!  It was really good!  As my entree I ordered The Stir Fry with quinoa meatballs.  I enjoyed the Stir Fry.  I have never tried quinoa meatballs before, they were okay.  Next time I will probably get chicken instead.

After dinner, I had a very happy tummy.  I had just enough room for some dairy free dessert.  I am ecstatic to add another great restaurant to my approved list of dairy free friendly restaurant list.

Review of Nature’s Plate- Plant Based Meals to go

I have never heard of a food place with vegan meals to go.  So I was very intrigued by this concept.  A coworker let me know about Nature’s Plate.  They are located in Dallas (Lake Highlands and North Dallas).  They have a weekly menu with different entrees, snacks, sides and desserts.  The store only has refrigerators for you to pick out what you want.  They have eating utensils there.  Most of their foods require a microwave.

Creamy Chipotle QuinoaRaspberry Breakfast Parfait

I ordered a raspberry breakfast parfait and Creamy Chipotle Quinoa.  I liked the breakfast parfait.  The creamy chipotle quinoa was ok.  Next time I plan to try another dish like the enchilada soup, queso, any of the enchiladas and dessert items.

Pictures taken from the Nature’s Plate website.  For more information about Nature’s Plate, click here.  Thank you for visiting and reading!  Don’t forget to follow me and comment on this post!  Additionally you can follow my Instagram account @smilewithoutcheese  New posts every Monday!

How to Find Food Allergy or Preference Friendly Restaurants

I love going out to eat but sometimes it makes me miss the simpler days.  There were days when I didn’t have to worry about what was in my food or getting sick.  Eating at restaurants is a lot of extra work.  In this post I will share how I find food allergy or preference friendly restaurants.  I will use examples specifically from my dairy free experiences.

  1. pexels-photo-218717.jpegGoogle restaurants: The first step of the restaurant research that I take is going straight to google.  In the search engine I type dairy free restaurants or vegan restaurants.  I read google reviews and begin previewing menus to see if the comments are accurate.  Unfortunately there are a lot of people who write google reviews who don’t know the difference between dairy free, vegan, vegetarian and gluten free.  So you have to continue your research beyond the google comments.  Recently I have been using Trip Advisor , Yelp, and Happy Cow to find restaurants for vacations and local food finds.  They identify restaurants by if they have vegan, vegetarian or gluten free on the menu.  They have direct links to the restaurant menu, reviews and reservations.
  2. pexels-photo-709840.jpegPreview the menu: Eating out takes a lot of extra work, you have to research the restaurant and menu beforehand to make sure you can find something to eat there.   Also if the restaurant is a chain restaurant they more than likely have a allergen menu online in addition to a nutritional facts.  So you can see if the item you would like to order contains your allergy or dietary preference.  This is especially helpful.
  3. Image result for instagramInstagram:  Do not underestimate the power of social media.  I look to my Instagram followers to find new and good restaurants.  The restaurant will share menus, photos and people will write their honest reviews.  Plus you can direct message the restaurant to get quick responses.  If the restaurant is good, they will answer quick.  If they don’t then don’t eat there.
  4. person-woman-smartphone-calling.jpgCall the restaurant if necessary:  I have not yet done this, but I think that it’s safe to assume that if you have any questions the restaurant should be able to answer them directly prior.  If they want your business they should be straight with you and whether or not they can accommodate your eating allergy or preference.  If they seem unsure or shady on the phone then I would advise against eating there.
  5. pexels-photo-373465.jpegRead reviews: Read google comments, read blog posts, search Instagram and talk to people about their experiences at the restaurant in question.  There are a lot of websites dedicated to helping people with allergies or preferences find restaurants that are safe to eat at.  To name a few there’s Allergy Eats, Go Dairy Free, Find Me Gluten Free and Happy Cow.  These sites can help you find restaurants based on your specific food allergy or preference.  Learn from other peoples experiences and take their advice.
  6. pexels-photo-1036567.jpegTalk with the restaurant staff: On top of this preliminary research when I am in the restaurant I am talking to the serving staff.  Recently if I am unsure about what to order off the menu, I ask the waiter what their suggestion is.  They can usually come up with a safe recommendation for me that is dairy free.  An important thing I talk about if the dish contains dairy and about cross contamination.  I have found out the hard way that I am really sensitive to cross contamination, I have gotten sick from french fries sharing the same fryer as a dish that contained dairy.  Eating out is a very delicate situation, you are putting your trust in the restaurant to make sure that you don’t get sick.  So I am being super clear to the serving staff no milk, butter or cheese because something as little as butter on a pan can make me sick.  When speaking to serving staff I am clear that I have a dairy allergy (even though I’m only lactose intolerant) I have been told that you always need to be overly cautious so the restaurant will take you seriously and take necessary precautions.  I am explicitly saying right away, “I have a dairy allergy, just so you know for cross contamination please make a note for the chief” to the wait staff even if I know the dish does not contain dairy.  That’s one of the first things I would say to the waiter.
  7. pexels-photo-615479.jpegShare your experience with the restaurant and with others.  Post a review on google, write a blog post, post on Instagram and spread the word to other people by talking.  There are many people with allergies or preferences who are looking for restaurants that are safe to eat at.
  8. pexels-photo-210661.jpegNext time you go out to dinner stick with restaurants you have had good experiences at or try something new.  Keep growing your go-to list of safe restaurants to eat at.
  9. REPEAT.  The work is unfortunately never done.  Restaurants are constantly changing their menus and allergen menu information.  I recommend checking everything monthly to see if any of your favorite dishes ingredients have changed.

With all of this planning and preparation it is still a huge leap of faith eating out.  There’s still a chance of getting sick but after I have eaten at a restaurant a few time I feel more comfortable and confident.  I hope these tips help you successfully eat out with your food allergy or preference.  Please learn from my mistakes and experiences.  If you have any thoughts or suggestions please comment and share.  I am no way near perfecting the practice of eating out with a food allergy or preference, all I can do is keep trying.  My hope for the future is that our social media filled world will help people with food allergy or preferences group together and learn from each other.
