Vegandale Houston- November 9, 2019

Since attending Vegandale Chicago twice and moving to Texas, I was very excited to go to Vegandale Houston.  I have always enjoyed myself at Vegandale Chicago so I was excited to see what Houston had to offer.  Plus I knew that it would be a lot of Texas based vendors at the event.

We got a hotel right by the park so it was perfect to walk to and from.  Also we could take a break back at the hotel too.  I list my food stops below:

  1. Nodoh Vegan fried mozzarella sticks. They are California based. This was our first stop and last stop of the day. It was amazing! The best vegan mozzarella sticks I’ve eaten to date! Wow they are crispy, gooey and cheesy. I had to get them twice and get the frozen kind to take home too. I hope they put their products back on their website so I can order some.

2. Daiya Foods. I was happy to see them at this years Vegandale! They were giving out free Chocolate Fudge Crunch ice cream bars. It was really good! I hope to find them in stores soon.

3. Pepperoni’s Pizza. Vegan pizza was exactly what I needed. It was delicious.

4. Bam’s Vegan. I was excited to finally get Bam’s Vegan. The line was so long but it was completely worth it. It was nachos with seafood in it. It was really filling.

5. Good Food Chicago. I knew I had to wait in line for a hot dog. It was a deep dish hot dog with marinara and cheese on it. Really good!

6. Avocadomama Vegan Mac & Cheese. I have seen Avocadomama on instagram and I was so excited to finally try it. Wow it was really good! It was really good sauce and the breadcrumbs on top were really good.

Review of Nature’s Plate- Plant Based Meals to go

I have never heard of a food place with vegan meals to go.  So I was very intrigued by this concept.  A coworker let me know about Nature’s Plate.  They are located in Dallas (Lake Highlands and North Dallas).  They have a weekly menu with different entrees, snacks, sides and desserts.  The store only has refrigerators for you to pick out what you want.  They have eating utensils there.  Most of their foods require a microwave.

Creamy Chipotle QuinoaRaspberry Breakfast Parfait

I ordered a raspberry breakfast parfait and Creamy Chipotle Quinoa.  I liked the breakfast parfait.  The creamy chipotle quinoa was ok.  Next time I plan to try another dish like the enchilada soup, queso, any of the enchiladas and dessert items.

Pictures taken from the Nature’s Plate website.  For more information about Nature’s Plate, click here.  Thank you for visiting and reading!  Don’t forget to follow me and comment on this post!  Additionally you can follow my Instagram account @smilewithoutcheese  New posts every Monday!

Review of V-Eats Modern Vegan- Dallas, TX

Previously, I skipped V-Eats Modern Vegan at Vegandale Chicago but not at the Texas Veggie Fest.  I decided to try their Chick-non basket.  It was out of this world!  I loved it and again my dairy and meat eating boyfriend loved it.  I thought that I would never eat fried chicken again since moving to Texas but this was amazing!

Finally, I made it to the V-Eats Modern Vegan.  The restaurant is located in a hip and very cute part of Dallas (Trinity Grove).  The restaurant is very small but very nice.  I’m glad I made reservations online because there was a huge wait.  We were seated right away and I was so excited to preview the menu.

We got the chips and queso for an appetizer.  The chips and queso was very good, I enjoyed every bite!  I ordered the Country Fried Chick-Non because I loved it at the Texas Veggie Fair.  I was surprised to learn that the dish was made with Deep Fried Oyster Mushrooms w/Mushroom Gravy and came with Mac n’ Cheese, & Grilled Vegetables.  It was really good!  But I did not like the gravy that came on it.  I don’t like gravy, I never have dairy free or not.  Also, I got so full, so fast.  My boyfriend ordered the General Tso’s Chick-Non.  It is made with Crispy Battered Oyster Mushrooms in Tangy Sweet Sauce w/Coconut Milk Rice & Chinese Broccoli.  He loved it!  It tasted good.  For dessert, I ordered the vegan chocolate lava cake.  My first vegan chocolate lava cake, it did not disappoint!

A Dairy Free Weekend in Austin, TX

Since moving to Texas I have done a lot of research to find the vegan hot spots in Texas.  Whenever I would search vegan food or ice cream near Dallas I would somehow end up back to Austin.  After searching on Instagram I learned that Austin, Texas is the vegan ice cream capital of the United States.  They even had an vegan ice cream crawl, I was so disappointed that I couldn’t attend.  But I put all the stops on my vegan ice cream bucket list.  Austin is known for being extremely vegan friendly.  I have been so excited for this trip because there were a lot of headquarters in Austin that I have been waiting to visit.

Ice Cream:

  • 20190118_224808Lick Honest Ice Creams: This was our first stop of the trip.  They had 4 vegan flavors at the shop.  Of course, I tried them all.  I had one scoop of the chocolate chocolate vegan ice cream flavor.  I can’t remember the other flavor I ate but it was tasty.  It was a good first stop but was excited for all the vegan ice cream to follow.
  • 20190120_194530Sweet Ritual: I was most excited for Sweet Ritual.  Their Instagram is very tempting.  All the shop is vegan which is so exciting!  I ate the cookies and cream flavor.  It was good but I do enjoy when my cookies and cream is chunky.  I love having large chunks of Oreos.  If I went back I would probably try another flavor.  But by far this was my favorite vegan ice cream stop.
  • 20190120_155006Milky Way Shakes:  Milky Way Shakes is a hidden gem.  But really it was pretty hidden.  I didn’t realize it was in the back of a restaurant in a small trailer.  The shake was definitely worth the wait and hype.  It is completely vegan.  I ordered the chocolate super moon shake.   It was so intricate and tasted out of this world.  I haven’t had a milkshake in so long and it was amazing!  I want to go back the next time I’m in Austin.

Food:

  • 20190119_114725Blenders and Bowls:  Blenders and Bowls is known for having the best acai bowls.  If you have been reading my blog you know I’m obsessed with acai bowls.  I ordered the O.G. and Strawberry Almond Butter Toast.  I really enjoyed both of the things I ordered.  The bowl was large and had amazing toppings (strawberries, bananas, honey and granola).  My only wish was that there was more honey on it.  The strawberry almond nut bread was on thick break and was again very good.  It was perfect to split between 2 people.  Everything was beautifully presented on the plate or in the bowl.  Everything I ate was dairy free too.
  • 20190119_154132.jpgThe Vegan Nom:  I didn’t realize that Austin had a big food truck/trailer scene until we ate at The Vegan Nom.  It was a chilly and windy weekend in Austin, but I did not mind eating outside.  I really enjoyed my vegan breakfast tacos!  They serve them all day and they were incredible.  My only wish is that they hadn’t sold out of their nachos!  Next time I plan to visit earlier in the day to get them.
  • Next Level Burger:  I was thrilled that there was a Next Level Burger in the Whole Foods!  It was really cool that you order from an iPad and they prepare everything as instructed.  You can completely customize your order with anything you can imagine.  I couldn’t believe everything was plant based on the menu.  I ordered a beyond meat burger and their signature cheese fries.  I enjoyed my burger a lot.  But the secret sauce on the fries was too intense for me, next time I will stick with just cheese.  Next time I plan to save room for a milkshake!

  • 20190120_124008Bouldin Creek Cafe: We went around noon and this place was packed!  The wait time for a table was insane!  We ended up rethinking our choice and was going to place a to go order.  Luckily, a spot for two opened up at the bar.  The restaurant was completely vegetarian and anything could be made vegan.  I enjoyed the vegan tamale breakfast.  My favorite part about it was the tofu scramble.  I was able to make mini breakfast tacos with tortilla shells.  Next time I visit Austin, I will be back to eat here!  It was also conveniently next to the welcome to Austin mural.
  • 20190120_190932Revolution Vegan Kitchen:  This was a bit of a drive from our hotel but I was pumped for it.  Online they advertise that they sell notarella sticks (vegan mozzarella sticks!)  We got their so late they were out of majority of their menu items.  I ended up ordering spicy shrimp tacos and curly fries.  I really liked both.  I will be back for those vegan mozzarella sticks!!
  • IMG_20190121_115038_708Arol’s:  This was our last food stop of the trip.  We ordered the Bacon cheeseburger and tator tots.  I liked it but by the end of the trip I was so full.

Bakery:

  • Capital City Bakery:  An all vegan bakery!  It was a great place to experience.  There were so many options I had no idea what to get.  I settled for a chocolate chip cookie.  It was so soft and good.  Next time I go, I’m trying their vegan cheesecake.

Stores:

  • Outdoor Voices Headquarter and store:  I was excited to experience both.  I was able to stop and take a picture in front of the headquarters.  It was cool to shop in their house like shop.  They were having a sale so it was a great day to be there.

  • imagejpeg_0Whole Foods Market: Actual heaven on Earth.  I was in my happy place.
  • 20190120_142930Erin Condren:  Finally!!  My inner teacher and organizing self was ecstatic.  I think I touched everything in the store.  I went home with a cart full.  It was so much better than ordering online.  I will be back!  I already can’t wait!!
  • 20190120_152108Rabbit Food Grocery:  An all vegan grocery store!  It was a neat experience to see what vegan products I have seen before and ones that I would want to try!  Very cool!
